Ok, so what if I told you CT would score 4 points (after being kicked out of the game, following a brutally bad technical foul call); Tarke (who I still love) would have a comically bad 2-17 shooting performance (how’s that even possible); Tejada would continue his funk (3 total points in the last two games); and Sulaiman would score 2 points, and …we’d win by 11, on the road, on short rest. After May channeled his good Timberlake in the 1st half, you knew DE was going to take him away in the second half, and when they did, up stepped DWill, who was virtually unstoppable towards the end of the game. And kudos to Jones, with another solid 8 point effort, and to Lowery, for draining those two foul shots late in the game. I saved the best for the last…what a clutch performance by Chase Paar. He chipped in a few points, but really played stellar D, after CT got the boot. Credit to Skerry for calling out the abomination that was the ejection of CT. As best I could see, he simply slapped the ball out of Davis’s hands, which, in a big conference game, hardly seemed to have been deserving a technical foul. Having said that, CT needs to do a better job of maintaining his composure, and not giving bad refs like this an excuse to T him up. 6-2, with W’s vs DE & C of C (on the road) along with W’s vs Drexel & UNCW. I don’t know how long they can keep this up, given some of the inherent limitations they have, but for now, I’m just going to enjoy it. On to NE at home Thursday, in what should be a revenge game for us

Great that they made the necessary adjustments at halftime, especially on the defensive end. That stretch with 3 or 4 straight steals turned the game around. Also great the the free throw shooting was a positive story this time.

Who is next????? Hofstra! Keep it rolling coaches and players. Proud Alum here wearing his custom made Charles Thompson long sleeve who was 8-8 from the foul line tonight. 👏🐯🏀

Kinda crazy given we have beat all three teams in our conference who are ranking. Probably better to be in the underdog position anyway

So, good win today. Not shocking, but with Charles picking up two strange technical fouls (one in the first half as he and Drumgoole were holding onto the ball out of bounds). Another where Davis gave him a slight bump and he knocked the ball out of his hands with about 12:30 left in the game. Good *Chase Paar. Throw out the numbers. He played 21 minutes, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and a block. I thought he got tired at the end and Davis capitalized, but considering he had to play the final 12 minutes on a bad knee (had an injection to help the pain), he did an excellent job. *May was fantastic with 23 points. Would like to see him make a better decision on the Paar pass and a drive where he should have pulled the ball out after an offensive rebounds (he turned it over). *Defense was extraordinary at times. Held a good shooting Delaware team to 39% from the field and 5-of-19 from beyond the arc. *FT shooting 19 of 26 for 73%. It would be nice to average that each game and Lowery made both of his! Looks like he changed his form. *Dylan Williamson was magnificent in the second half. Even if some of that was playground basketball, he found a way to score when Davis kept scoring on the other end. Bad *The Thompson technical fouls. Right or wrong. He has to be the bigger man and not respond to Davis on that second tech. In some ways, Towson played better without him and as much as I like Charles, I'd use Chase a lot during the end of the games since he's a slightly better FT shooter. Ugly *Tarke's 2 for 17 shooting. and 0-6 from 3pt. Too many shots for Tarke and not enough passing (1 assist). Thought he was bumped on a couple of drives and didn't get the calls.

    D. Williamson was D. Wade in the second half today. https://towsontigers.com/news/2024/1/27/mens-basketball-may-williamson-pace-mens-basketball-to-67-56-win-at-delaware-for-fourth-straight-victory.aspx

The one thing I have really liked to see from this team lately is role players stepping in and contributing effectively in a variety of ways. Messiah Jones is averaging 7.3 ppg, shooting 10-12 (83%) and is a +41 in an average of a little over 17 minutes over the last three games. Toniya Sulaiman had 4 offensive rebounds (8 overall), has contributed 9 offensive rebounds in the last two games and leads the team with 15 offensive rebounds in conference play. Chaase Paar chipped in 6 pts, was 3-4, and was a +9 on the floor in 14 minutes. Dylan Williamson didn't have a great game and only played 18 minutes, but knocked down the last two free throws, which we desperately needed and was a +8 on the floor. Skerry has figured out the Tarke, May and Thompson are the only guys he trusts playing 30 minutes per game. May led the way with 34 minutes, and it was good to see him score 15 points on only nine FGs while also grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds (only one less than Williams). Tarke continues to be our alpha player, and is not scared of any moment. Sometimes that doesn't lead to the greatest shot selection, but he had a couple of great hesitation shot fakes to score over Williams. Even though it took him 14 shots to get 18 points it is helpful to have his aggressiveness, because it opens up offensive rebounding and other opportunities. Charles fouled out in 25 minutes, but I thought he played really well defensively when he is in the game. It might not look like it statistically, but I feel like he gets the better of Williams in these matchups. He scored 12 points in 25 minutes has to be one of most explosive outputs, and he had a couple of key blocks. He is shooting 61.5% from the field in conference play. He does not qualify, but that would be second behind Williams if he did. Charles leads the team in conference play in rebounding, FG%, steals, blocks and is only two behind the lead in assists. One of the interesting things when you look at the conference-only stats is that of the top four teams (Drexel, Charleston, Towson and UNC-W) they only have three players in the top 25 of minutes played. White is 18th, May is 20th, Tarke is 22nd and Charleston and Drexel have no one on that list. The rotations of those teams and how they evolve throughout the year (probably not much) will be interesting to track. Going back to my original point I feel like Skerry has been doing a solid job rotating players and having them understand strengths when they get in the game. This might be the deepest Towson team from an athletic standpoint I can remember, so it is good he is doing that well because it was one of my primary criticism of him heading into conference play. Now it is time to send Delaware off to their new conference with a couple of Ls the next couple of weeks.

If you told me before the game that Tejada would score 1 point, CT was going to foul out, and we were only going to hit 4 3’s, I’d have told you we were going to get blown out. Go figure. Before touching on the positives, the elephant 🐘 in the room is the atrocious foul shooting. I have no doubt they work on it in practice, but it’s not translating to the games. Maybe they need a sports psychologist or hire a foul shooting savant to coach em up, I dunno. I love Tarke's game. When he drives to the basket, good things often happen. I thought CT was good on offense tonight, and even though he only had 4 boards, May & Suliaman combined for 18 rebounds. Kudos to Paar who chipped in with a couple nice baskets, and credit is due to my favorite whipping guy, Jones, who was 4-4 from the floor. And another nice game from Lowery, our Swiss Army knife, who had 5 assists. If you told me we'd be 5-2 in conference play, with 3 of those games against UNCW, C of C & Drexel, I'd have said sign me up for that, in a heartbeat. Make no mistake, this team has flaws, but they deserve credit for establishing themselves thus far as a legit candidate to finish in the top 4 in the conference. On to Delaware.

We've seen in these last couple of games just how much Tarke solidifies our backcourt. He's the veteran presence that was sorely needed and missed at the beginning of the season. The defense in the middle part of the 2nd half was outstanding and allowed for us to get out to the big lead. But as Mat mentioned, the drought hits and the shot selection was a touch questionable and before you know it, the Dragons are right back in it. Fortunate that DW knocked down those 2 free throws to get it to 3 because there's no doubt that if it had been a 1 or 2-point game, Drexel was going to the rack with it and based on what happened the final 2-3 minutes, they were going to get a good look at the rim. So now we've knocked off the other top 3 teams in the conference, one of them at their place. It would be great if we could treat Delaware on Saturday the way we treated JMU when we booted them out of the conference a couple years ago.

Sorry guys. A bit late here, but let's start with the Good, Bad, and Ugly. Good *Great win. Towson improves to 5-2 in the CAA and has now won 17 straight home games. *Home crowd of over 2,800. It rocked pretty well tonight. Even had a slight traffic jam going home after the press conference. When you hit it hard with marketing and special prices for concessions and tickets, you see the result. It helps the team and it also helps if the team is pretty good. *Yes, Towson is pretty good. After the Monmouth loss, nobody thought we'd beat UNCW, Charleston and Drexel. *Rebounding +5 was huge. Lowery with five assists and a huge block. Paar and Jones combined for 14 points and four rebounds. Sulaiman with 8 boards. Tarke with 18 points, 5 rebs. and 3 assists. Bad *Long drought from about 9:30 to 3:30 where we scored just four points. *Williamson and Tejada combined for 2 for 14. Dylan also had no assists and I thought he dribbled a bit too much tonight. Tejada couldn't finish inside and took just 1 three-pointer. Going inside against Amari Williams can be an adventure. Ugly *Free throw shooting. Towson is one of the worst teams in the nation (62.5%, 355th). They certainly showed that tonight (14 of 24) as every FT down the stretch was 1 for 2 until Williamson made both with around 13 seconds left. Fortunately, Towson did not foul and allowed Justin Moore to take a contested 3 at the buzzer.

It takes a team effort! We don’t have a #1 guy in any category, but we can beat any team in this league when all 5 guys are clicking

I think Lunardi just puts whoever is in first place in one-bid conference leagues during the regular-season. You might be giving him too much credit for following what is truly going on at a mid-major level.

For one bid conferences Lunardi puts the first-place team in his Bracketology so the Dragons should still remain.

I think everyone learned a little about themselves between the debacle at NE and the trip to Charleston. Players seem to be settling into their roles much better than the mishmash in the first dozen games. Had a nice fried chicken dinner tonight in tribute to the win.

Another win.. “Towson vs Everyone” Good teams find a way and we did yet again. Students back and I have this feeling the Towson Arena will have a huge crowd this Thursday for our paybacks to Northeastern!

Off to a very nice start. Although I hope he continues to develop and improve, the only problem with that in today's transfer portal/NIL world is we may only have him for 1 or 2 more years. Enjoy him while we can!

Guthrie was such a great player off the bench for us. He brought this energy and desire that has yet to be matched by any past or current Towson bench player. Probably because of his maturity.. I believe he was already a Dad when he joined the team. This season has started to come together because of Tarke coming on. Remember how many of us were dismissing him as a so so player after his first game (Bryant I believe!?) Man has he been great. I’m just excited to have both Tejada and Lowery playing and contributing so much this season. We really landed “2” Swiss Army type players. Pat and staff get a “A” already for this freshman class this season. If this team can shoot 40% or better from beyond the arc “consistently” and improve their foul shooting I think we can beat anyone in the CAA. Time will tell. And how much do we owe Mat for all the coverage this season and in the past. I’m not in the area and rely on him so much for the insights. Throw Jake into the mix now as well. Tremendous coverage for the program which results in extensive criticism as well.. goes hand in hand. Still got this feeling this particular group does something big in the CAA tournament. Tejada has always shown he wants the ball and he’s a gym rat 🐀 working on his game. Maybe he’s what Carmelo was to Syracuse this season for us. Or KD for Texas? Not the same superstar players they are but a freshman who just willed us to win and changed our fortunes. Time will tell!
